New Recycling Requirements for Automotive Containers in Colorado
Colorado is expanding recycling requirements to include empty automotive and petroleum product containers. Interchange 360 has been approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to administer the compliance program.
Beginning in 2026, these containers can no longer be disposed of as trash. Collection and recycling will be supported through the existing network of transporters and processors operating across the state.
What This Means for You
If you already transport or process used oil or automotive materials, this program builds on what you do today.
- Automotive containers are added as a recyclable material stream
- Oil handling requirements do not change
- Containers must be drained and managed separately for recycling
The program is designed to integrate with existing collection and processing operations.
What to Do Next
To participate in Colorado’s program, service providers should:
- Review the Program Manual and operational guidance
- Register with Interchange 360.
- Contact Shelly Fuller, Director of Operations with any questions.
